Chinese American history
The Chinese reached North America during the time of the Spanish colonial rule over the Philippines (1565–1815), where they had established themselves as fishermen, sailors, and merchants on Spanish galleons that sailed between the Philippines and Mexican ports. California belonged to Mexico until 1848, and historians have asserted that a low number of Chinese had already settled there by the mid-18th century.
I was told that my maternal grandfather lived in Boston and had a restaurant there. I’m not certain when he moved to Boston, but it could have been as early as 1910 and he supposedly stayed in Boston until 1960. He must have moved back to China after that at some point because he died in China the year I was born. Then my grandmother (at the age of 73! she lived to 100) came to Canada to help my family take care of me. :)
